Since Homer’s Odyssey, the Ionian island of Ithaca has symbolised the idea of journey’s end- the seemingly unreachable destination. In 2022 the Literary Salon is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the publication of Ulysses by James Joyce. Many other artists and writers have been inspired by this epic and Ithaka, written in 1911 by the Greek poet Constantine Cavafy is one of the best loved and translated 20th century poems about the Odyssey.
Ithaka encourages us to consider our own struggle to find our way, whatever the nature of our goal and asks us to think about the pleasures and perils of finally coming home. Over the course of two hours, we will read and analyse the poem together and come to a deeper understanding of this great work.
