SALON SPECIAL
David Stone wrote his PhD thesis looking at the Jewish underpinning of Joyce’s major works, using the texts of the works themselves, Joyce’s notebooks and to a lesser degree his letters, and external sources and readings. By approaching the works with a Jewish sensibility, Joyce’s pluralistic approach to religions can be highlighted; also, the underestimation by previous scholarship of the Jewish themes in his works. Other topics of general importance are ritual, race, and textual hermeneutics.
I have asked David to share a glimmer of his knowledge with Joyce readers in the Salon community. David will offer his reflections and open the space for questions and discussion. I appreciate the wonderful sharing of knowledge in the Salon and, in particular, David taking the time to put his thoughts together for this special event.
